Overview

This course focuses on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) used for mapping, spatial analysis, and decision making in real world applications. The GIS Training Program provides a complete foundation in geospatial data creation, management, analysis, and map production using industry standard and open source GIS platforms. Learners gain hands on experience with ArcGIS, ArcGIS Pro, and QGIS, enabling them to work confidently across multiple GIS environments used in academia, government, and industry.

Course Content

GIS Fundamentals

  • Spatial data types, coordinate systems, projections

  • Data import, cleaning, and management

  • Understanding geodatabases and project structures

Data Creation & Editing

  • Digitization of features (points, lines, polygons)

  • Editing tools and topology concepts

  • Attribute table operations and field calculations

Vector Analysis

  • Buffer, clip, dissolve, merge, intersect

  • Overlay analysis for decision making

  • Proximity and network-based analysis

  • Thiessen (Voronoi) polygons

Raster Analysis

  • Raster data handling and preprocessing

  • Terrain analysis (slope, aspect, hillshade)

  • Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) & other Spectral Indices

  • Reclassification and raster extraction

Spatial Visualization & Cartography

  • Thematic mapping and symbology

  • Labelling and annotation

  • Map layout design and export

Software Ecosystem Skills

  • Working with ArcGIS tools and extensions

  • Modern workflows in ArcGIS Pro

  • Open source capabilities using QGIS plugins.
